In Pemberville, Ohio there is a little store that preserves a sense of the past.

First opened in the 1870's, Beeker's was run from around the 1930's  to 1996  by the Beeker family.  Miss Mildred Beeker took full ownership in the '50's and did everything that it takes to run a store.

The indented step shows the wear of over a hundred and thirty years of traffic.  In the beginning it was trod by farmers who were just breaking ground at the end of the 1800’s.    The townies, who chose to live closer to the railroad station and the Opera House and the little river that runs through Pemberville counted on Beeker's for all those things they couldn't grow at home.  Families made the trek into town on Saturday nights, for their weekly shopping and trading and visiting.  Miss Beeker has said that she remembers the store being open until midnight, because folks just didn't want to leave. Children then and children now love(d) the ‘penny’ candy. (It’s more like a nickel now, but kids still love it.)

Todd Sheets bought the General Store from Miss Beeker back in 1996 and has preserved the ambience of an age long past.  Todd offers straw hats and flannel shirts, ribbons and buttons and calico, Amish candy and ‘penny’ candy.  Long time Pembervillians can buy grocery items that have become hard to find—like laundry bluing and rock salt and that particular type of soap that’s not so popular anymore.

Todd has kept much of the original equipment and added antique items to enhance that feel of a century of “being”.  The brass cash register is a treasure as well as the special cases for

The store is long and high, with a tin ceiling and creaky wooden floor.  The wooden counters and wooden display cases and wooden benches and barrels all add to the aroma and sense of "old"...good "old", I think.

At the very back, up a step, Todd has a permanent Christmas store where he displays Victorian type ornaments, European hand-blown glass ornaments and tin toys as in days of yore.

If you are ever taking the scenic route on #105 through northwest Ohio, driving along the Portage River that flows into Lake Erie.  Be sure to stop in at Beeker's General Store.  It's right on #105 in downtown Pemberville, you can't miss it.  I highly recommend the Amish Maple Nut Clusters as a traveling treat.
